Introducing the Bowen Technique - our Enso perspective

The human body is fully equipped with all the facilities and processes it needs to maintain good health and even repair damage. However, extreme mental and physical conditions can upset the body's ability to heal itself and the Bowen Technique has shown itself to be a particularly effective way of assisting the body to recover its usual will, and ability, to heal itself.

The Theory behind the Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique was developed by Tom Bowen, an Australian from the city of Geelong in Victoria. He developed a procedure involving gentle manipulations, moves, that is applied to soft tissue of the body. This sends messages via the brain deep into the cells, causing them to retrieve their memories of a relaxed, balanced state of well-being, and consequently they initiate self-healing that comes from the very core, and exactly according to the body's original blueprints.

The treatment is characterised by two important and complementary phases, a hands-on manipulation of the body that sets up this messaging process, followed by rest periods that allow the body to respond.

The various series of carefully calculated and precisely applied moves of the Bowen Technique, produce a profoundly relaxing effect on the autonomic nervous system. Then, with the interference of built-up tension out of the way, the body systems and processes return to balance and are better able to fulfil their innate abilities of self-healing. The rest periods during treatments are key to allowing this self-healing to initiate fully, before the body must return to the day's activities.

A Bowen Treatment

A specific treatment may be tailored to target a specific area or problem, however, treatments are always aimed at treating the whole body to encourage complete well-being.

Typical Bowen moves

Because of the gentle nature of the Bowen moves, they can be applied directly to the skin, but are equally effective when applied through light and loose clothing. The client will be treated while resting or sitting on a comfortable massage bed.

During the treatment itself, the practitioner will use the thumbs and forefingers to apply a series of selected rolling moves to muscles, tendons and nerve bundles. The moves used will be according to the plan for the treatment. The client soon achieves a particularly relaxed state and will find the treatment comforting and completely non-invasive. During one treatment lasting from 30 minutes to an hour, there will be one or more sessions of treatment followed by rest times.

Because of the safe and gentle nature of the Bowen moves that involve only light pressure, the Technique is suitable for absolutely all ages, infant to aged, and can even be administered during pregnancy. Children enjoy their sessions and settle down quickly when being treated with these gentle moves.

After Treatment

It had been observed through blood testing, that after a treatment using the Bowen Technique, there is an increase in the rate of biological chemistry in the body, and a more speedy normalisation of heart-rate after fluctuations of heart rhythms. This is accompanied by reduced stress levels and a general feeling of well-being.
